A-Z of Ethical Communication in Education: R is for Reflection

The art of being reflective is the time needed to review our experiences. When we are in a state of fight/flight (see f) real reflection cannot happen. When we are working so fast or under the sway of judgemental narratives, our decisions can be shallow, knee jerky or harmful to others. When we are able to reflect, not only can we learn new and more compassionate ways to communicate and work with others, but we can make helpful observations about the behaviour and practices of those around us.

In Mcschools, the worst examples of bullying and harmful actions take place where reflection is mistaken for the misuse of the word ‘accountability.’ Accountability should be a call to bring our best selves into our performance but in the model of ‘McAcccountability’ it becomes a stick used to beat those not on Mcmessage or challenging the predominant thinking.

For all those who have been caught up in the crossfire of educational institutions mistreatment, especially during this unprecedent year of sadness and difficulty, let us wish good health, happiness and freedom from worry to all.

In 2021 lets say:

  • – NO to bullying
  • – NO to NDA’s
  • – NO to short-sighted thinking
  • – NO to over dependence on hierarchy
  • – NO to ‘bottom line’ thinking
  • – NO to sarcasm and sneering as a method of management
  • – NO to ill treatment of staff, students and the wider communities
  • – NO to being silenced.
