A-Z of Ethical Communication in Education: A is for Acronym

A is for Acronym ‘an abbreviation formed from the initial letters of other words and pronounced as a word’

The use of acronyms in our everyday life is the ‘newmal’ and the assumption that others know and understand what they mean and are..  Just as with COVID we have been subjected to copious amounts of contradictory ‘new’ rules to instil in our ‘normal’ lives, we are now subjected to copious amounts of Acronyms that may or may not have multiple interpretations/meanings both professionally and privately, creating exclusive ‘clubs’ for those who ‘understand’.  I understand the reason and use of acronyms, often creating a recognisable tag line for perhaps a social movement or disease they can often lead to misinterpretations, exclusivity and therefore barriers to understanding and commonality.

With that in mind in professional settings the clamour for the use of acronyms is often beyond comprehension – pardon the pun. Those ‘in the know’ use/create acronyms within their professional field little realising that others are not comprehending or on the same wavelength.  In education settings we fall foul of the same thing where everything becomes abbreviated with little regard for common understanding.  Ironic when the learning process is our primary aim and we are trying to instil an understanding in others.  Putting ones hand up to ask for clarification in training sessions/meetings/lectures where assumptions are made that you know what a PAP/PIP/PEP/POP/PUP  is and the difference between, is a brave thing when everyone else can look like they understand perfectly.  Those who walk away and don’t ask can find themselves open to incorrect interpretation and therefore misunderstanding.
